I’ve decided to blame the Holiday Season…. We were all really busy, the excuses include weather, out-of-town visitors, family events, household projects, winter colds, and (just a little bit) of watching football…
The bottom line, though, is that with all of our stuff going on the last couple of months, I let the project slow to a screeching halt. We were still forming our “two-working-parents” daily routine, and the boys are growing so fast that we constantly have to change things up to keep them fed, watered, and entertained! I’m thankful the project was at an ok stopping point, and I don’t think the break cost me much more than momentum (and maybe some blog readers!), but that’s ok. We had a great holiday season and spent some amazing time with our family and friends… But the water is settling down here and I’m ready to get moving again, with maybe more motivation than ever! The time “off” has given me some time to think, though, and some “slow down and strategize” perspective. I still like the idea of building and selling tables, I think the margins are good, I’m getting better at it, and it’s a lot of fun to create. This little holiday break / major time crunch, though, has me considering the long-term viability of the plan. I think it will be rough to scale “table building” while keeping it a one man operation, and my current “facility” (aka, my garage) is pretty limiting for such large projects. There’s certainly room for improvements in efficiency, and I think that building and selling some more for the time being is a good opportunity, but I need to keep looking for something that I can scale a little better for the time, space, and skill set that I have. Of course, I wouldn’t be going on about it if I didn’t have something of an idea! I’m in the processes of investigating some new, higher tech equipment that might allow me to add capability to the things I can potentially design and make, in addition to being more scalable and more repeatable. More to come in the coming days (yes, I’ll actually start posting again!) while I continue making some decisions, but I’m pretty excited about this idea. It will be a pretty large cash investment (especially sitting at the $1700 we have now) and will definitely take some time and effort in getting up-and-running, but I think it could continue to pay dividends on the investment. So, keep checking in, I’m excited to get rolling again, and hopefully we will have some exciting new updates in the coming weeks. I think 2017 is going to be a big year, and I can’t wait to attack it with enthusiasm!
